Xeomin blocks the nerve electrical impulse to muscle cells just the same as Botox does. As a result of that disrupted transmission, those affected muscle fibers do not contract as much or very little and no longer cause furrowing or "cranky lines" to occur in the treated area. Xeomin is similar to Botox which is made by the Allergan company in that the major protein which interrupts nerve transmission is wholly together, there are just less accessory protective proteins around the active Xeomin molecule.
For patients who are not affected by Botox or who have developed a tolerance (immune to Botox) to the drug, as well as new patients who have not had either previously, Xeomin is an interesting and innovative new cosmetic medication to treat frown lines and slow or reverse facial aging.
Currently, Xeomin is not marketed in Canada as a cosmetic product, however it is allowed to be sold for medical uses. Side effects are the same for Xeomin as they would be for Botox.
