Even with good nutrition, dieting and consistent exercise it can be hard to lose love handles and patches of fat on the stomach and back. If you are considering body contouring or a fat removal procedure in Kelowna you should consider CoolSculpting. The technology is well suited to both men and women. CoolSculpting is approved by the FDA and Health Canada. It uses targeted cooling to remove unwanted fat deposits. This treatment can help give you the toned and lean body you want.
Background Information About This Procedure
It was discovered at Harvard University in Boston, MA. The technology uses Cryolipolysis, a process that targets specific areas with controlled cooling to reduce fat tissue. The process only targets fat cells and does not harm other tissue in the area. The targeted cooling causes fat cells to break down and be removed by the body. Over time this has been proven to result in a 25 per cent reduction in the thickness of fat layers. Treatments usually take an hour or two depending on the area being treated.
How does it work?
The treatment applicator is placed on the area with unwanted fat. When the treatment begins, skin and fat are gently but firmly pulled closer to the chill plates which remove heat from the tissue to just above zero degrees celsius. The fat is then kept at this temperature for just less than one hour. Treatment then ceases and the fat returns to normal following treatment until it is eliminated naturally by the body. This process does not harm other cells and tissue in the area. Over the subsequent two to four months the patient will experience a more toned and slim body as the fat cells die off and are removed naturally by the body.
What areas can be treated?
CoolSculpting can be used to treat the abdomen, belly, love handles, muffin tops, back fat, inner thighs, banana rolls and excess male chest fat (gynecomastia)
What to expect after a treatment?
Since there is no cutting, injections or anesthesia patients can return to their everyday life after their appointment. They don’t have to plan for downtime to recover. Redness or bruising in the treated area are common.
What are the Results
In many patients CoolSculpting results in a natural and noticeable reduction in fat in treated areas in two to four months. This is without the risks and recovery time of more invasive treatments. CoolSculpting is not suited to those looking to lose weight or with obesity. It is for those looking to smooth specific areas with fat on them. Liposuction often results in lumpy or uneven fat removal whereas CoolSculpting achieves even results. CoolSculpting gives the treated area a smooth, lean and natural look. Our patients have been very satisfied with their results.
Are the results permanent?
CoolSculpting works by cooling fat cells causing them to die and be naturally removed by the body over the course of the subsequent four months. Normally between 20 and 25 per cent of cells disappear. This relies on a natural mechanism within the body. If the patient has the same diet and exercise as before the procedure the results should be long lasting. Weight gain will diminish them.
What happens to the fat?
The fat will die off and be removed by a natural process in your body. Each treatment can remove as much as 25 per cent of the fat layer.

Quick Answers About CoolSculpting Treatment
How Long Does the Coolsculpting Procedure Take?
The treatments take between 1–2 hours depending on the area being treated. Some treatments take longer if patients want several areas treated. Dr. Crippen will be able to tell you how long the treatment you want will take during a consultation.
Is the Fat Removal Permanent? Is There a Guarantee That Fat Won't Come Back in That Area?
Fat cells removed as a result of CoolSculpting will not come back. In adults fat cells do not regenerate once they die off and are removed by the body in this way. Fat cells may increase in that area if the patient gains weight or eats a certain diet. If no weight gain occurs the fat reduction in the area should remain over time.
Does Coolsculpting Work on Cellulite?
CoolSculpting has not been found to be effective at changing the appearance of cellulite. It is very different from the intended purpose of the treatment. We continue to look for cellulite treatments.
Can I Still Exercise After a Coolsculpting Treatment? I Want to Continue to Use Exercise As Part of My Weight Loss Plan.
Since there is no downtime or recovery period associated with CoolSculpting you can exercise as normal following the procedure. You don’t need to stop exercising before or after a CoolSculpting treatment. Many of our patients do exercise the same day as CoolSculpting is performed.
What Does the Coolsculpting Treatment Feel Like? Is It Painful?
Patients usually feel cooling and numbing of the treated area during a CoolSculpting procedure. The skin may remain numb for a while after the treatment. In some patients this lasts for a number of days or a couple of weeks after the procedure. Unlike liposuction, individuals can continue their everyday activities right after the treatment.
Can Coolsculpting Permanently Treat Gynecomastia? If Not How Long Does It Last?
Gynecomastia is often an embarrassing condition for which many men want a permanent treatment. CoolSculpting works on gynecomastia. DermMedica was the first clinic in the Okanagan to treat men for this condition using CoolSculpting. So far patients have been pleased with their results. The treatment is permanent so the fat deposits associated with gynecomastia would not return as long as the patient maintains their current weight. If weight gain occurs further breast fat tissue may develop.
How Long Does the Coolsculpting Procedure Last and How Many Treatments Are Needed?
CoolSculpting treatments take anywhere from 30-45 minutes per area and multiple areas are usually treated during the same session so you will likely be here for a few hours on average depending on what needs freezing. Example, two love handle areas will take about 30 minutes each to complete not including photos, setup and completion of the treatment.
Since Coolsculpting Freezes Fat to Kill It, Why Not Just Repeatedly Apply Ice Bags?
The reason we use a machine instead of ice is that it is impossible to control the skin temperature using just ice, you would very likely suffer frost bite in those areas which would result in skin damage. The coolsculpting machine keeps the fat frozen and the skin just above the freezing point to prevent any skin damage yet it’s cold enough to eliminate the fat cells below which area more easily damaged at that same temperature.
Does Coolsculpting Really Work?
It really does! Everyone at the clinic who needs CoolSculpting has had a treatment (including Dr. Crippen) and we all vouch for it’s effectiveness. We have been performing CoolSculpting longer than anyone else in the BC interior, since 2011.
How Soon After Having Coolsculpting Are Measurable Results Seen?
We find that results usually take 2-4 months to become apparent but some people will notice it quicker than this. The key is to make sure you perform a few treatments on the same area 1-2 months apart for more noticeable results. Each treatment should reduce the fat layer by about 20% which is great, but not all that noticeable. With two treatments you are achieving a ~40% reduction in the fat layer which is much more evident and noticeable.
Can Coolsculpting Help Get Rid of Fat in Men's Breast?
Absolutely, this is a relatively common area and request we have from our male patients. Usually one to two treatment sessions are required and recommended depending on the particular patients needs and desires.
With Cool Sculpting, If It Is Not Weightloss, Where Does the Frozen Fat "Go"?
The damaged fat cells undergo a process called “apoptosis” or programmed cell death. The fat cells break down naturally on their own and are absorbed by the body and used as energy. The fat is not deposited anywhere else nor is there any change to the blood of the patient.
